Understanding and managing grief

FORCE Bereavement guide front cover

FORCE has produced a book to help people dealing with the loss of a loved one and it may be especially valuable at a time when our charity is unable to offer its usual face to face support.

UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING GRIEF  has been put together specifically for those who have experienced bereavement after a death from cancer.

FORCE holds bereavement support days to provide an environment where you can talk to others going through a similar experience.

Unfortunately, those sessions cannot take place while we are all observing strict safety guidelines due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

We hope this new book will provide insights into the paths of grief and the emotions that come with bereavement.

Powerful

It also provides useful guidance on coping and moving forward plus powerful personal stories.

FORCE Oncology Support Specialist Gerry Gillespie (pictured) explained: “The death of a loved one to cancer is one of the hardest things many of us will face. FORCE is there to walk alongside you.

“As part of our support we offer bereavement days so that people can come together and support those who are facing this journey.

“We asked people to write their story in order to support others and out of that came the idea of the bereavement book to help those facing the loss of a loved one to cancer.

“The feedback we’ve had suggests the book can really help people on their personal journey, what to expect through bereavement. They realise that they are not on their own and that there are others who understand what they are going through.”

Generous

The book has been generously printed for free by leading Exeter company Stormpress.

Managing director Henry Luce said: “We are delighted to be able to support a valued local charity like FORCE, which is still doing such great work to help local people affected by cancer at a time when anxieties are particularly heightened.”

Gerry added: “We always wanted to share this book with as many people as possible and through the generosity of Stormpress that dream has become a reality.

“The impact and progress of each person’s grief is unique but there is enough common ground for us to know that it can help to describe the general effects of such a loss and some of the stages of recovering from it.

Lonely

“However lonely this path seems at times, it is trodden by an unexpectedly large number of people. The statistics are stark.

“There are around 600,000 deaths recorded in the UK every year and more than 160,000 are attributable to cancer. That’s more than one in four of all deaths.

“When you consider how many people may be deeply affected by each death, you see the true scale of mourning in our society and how much of that is brought about by cancer.”
