Volunteering at FORCE
Here Melvyn, who is at the Centre on a Tuesday afternoon explains his reason for volunteering for FORCE:
‘ In 2006 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and the specialist nurse referred me to FORCE, which I knew little about at that time. My wife and I were welcomed with a drink, and a pack which explained about FORCE and the services it provided. With all the help and advice we received, as well as the wonderful complementary therapies (which we both benefitted from), I wanted to put something back. Also, several members of my immediate family have also had cancer.
As soon as I retired, I applied to become a volunteer – attended the induction course, and have now completed over 5 years, working with a happy band of committed volunteers.
I look forward to my ‘shift’, and wish I could spare additional time to come in more often’.
