Chris determined to conquer Great West Run after cancer all-clear
When Chris Shaw from Copplestone was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 39, he and his wife, Carla, decided…
Before the day
🎽 Decide on your clothing, make sure it is light, cool &comfy, and ensure you have been out for a run in it.
🥤 Keep hydrated and fueled before the day – pasta or porridge are great pre-race foods.
📌Check the route
👋Know where your friends/family will be watching
📋 Sort all the on the day logistics out to prevent any panic or worry in the morning.
👟 Lay out you kit the night before so you know where everything is (also a great social media photo to help with that fundraising!)
In the morning
🍽️Eat 2-3 hours before
🥤Sip water
🎽Address any potential chaffing areas – Vaseline is good to rub between your toes etc.
☀️Sun cream! Make sure you apply it.
👟Make sure your shoe laces are tied, gels or running belts are comfy.
✍️Water stations are a good way to count down the distance – I often write each water station mile on my hand so I know when to expect them.
During the race
😎Take the first few miles easy.
🏃♀️Latch onto a pacer if you can, this stops you going off too fast and helps pull you round the last few miles.
🥤Water stations – stop and drink (don’t gulp) take two cup fills, if needed and put a third over your head/down the back of your neck if you’re hot.
🥳Take in the atmosphere, enjoy the crowds and cheers, knowing your doing an amazing thing for yourself and for an amazing charity.
